Methane is a very powerful greenhouse gas with the chemical formula CH4 (one atom of carbon and four atoms of hydrogen). It is the simplest alkane and the main component of natural gas.
Methane is also the main ingredient in natural gas. By using the principles presented here for converting organic waste into methane gas, even the most remote and wilderness area can have gas heating and electricity generation. There is another point of view which is also worth considering. The gases which we harness and utilized in this fashion would have been released into the atmosphere anyway. Capturing methane gas before it gets into the atmosphere can actually help to reduce the effects of climate change and other environmental pollution.
