Alternative Energy

METHANE-TO-ENERGY

By using the principles presented here for converting organic waste into methane gas, even the most remote and wilderness area can have gas heating and electricity generation.

Methane is a very powerful greenhouse gas with the chemical formula CH4 (one atom of carbon and four atoms of hydrogen). It is the simplest alkane and the main component of natural gas.

Methane is also the main ingredient in natural gas. By using the principles presented here for converting organic waste into methane gas, even the most remote and wilderness area can have gas heating and electricity generation. There is another point of view which is also worth considering. The gases which we harness and utilized in this fashion would have been released into the atmosphere anyway. Capturing methane gas before it gets into the atmosphere can actually help to reduce the effects of climate change and other environmental pollution.

Advantages of methane heating are:

  • Able to capture methane gas which is a powerful greenhouse gas with 25 times more heat than carbon dioxide and reduces the effects of climate change.
  • It produces a relatively small amount of air pollution and essentially no smoke.

How It Works

  1. Trash decomposes (or rots) in landfills, creating methane gas.
  2. Methane rises to the top of the landfill and is collected in pipes.
  3. The methane is burned to produce heat or generate electricity
